![]() ![]() When they arrive, danger comes not from some bug-eyed alien, but from a deadly protein. The ship's destination is the star Tau Ceti, which has two moons in the "goldilocks zone" capable of sustaining life. But before long, Freya takes over from her mother as one of humanity's leaders and the ship itself, thanks to its artificial intelligence, becomes not only an active character but also, rather delightfully, the story's narrator. In the wonderful early parts of the novel, Freya travels from region to region, and we're afforded a view of the human cultures that have developed. Much of the novel is interested in the various crises the ship undergoes. Robinson has argued that science fiction is the "realism" of our time.Īs it turns out, maintaining a functioning generation starship is a highly complex task, in which its ecosystems must be kept in strict balance. The political point here is to bring science fiction's function back to thinking about humanity's real, possible futures. If earlier generation starship novels tended to gesture towards the science, Robinson takes his thought-experiment seriously and remains within the bounds of scientific plausibility. In Aurora, the many ecosystems of a generation starship must be kept in strict balance. ![]()

Once again, Wecker has crafted an immigrant chronicle for the ages that grapples with the dual problems of the diaspora: attempting to assimilate into a new culture while at the same time keeping close one’s native culture, all while trying to find a place in the world. Ahmad and Chava, the golem, now must weather the rapid changes at the turn of the twentieth century in New York City: the sinking of the Titanic, the Triangle Shirtwaist fire, and the beginning of the Great War, as well as changes in their relationship to each other and their communities. The evil sorcerer who had imprisoned jinni Ahmad in a metal vial (spoilers!) was defeated at much personal cost in the first book. The Hidden Palacecomes out on June 8 and picks up shortly after the end of the first book (don’t worry – there are unobtrusive reminders in the text to get you up to speed with the preceding events). Fans of Helene Wecker’s award-winning historical fantasy novel, The Golem and the Jinni, rejoice – after eight years of waiting, we finally get a sequel! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In early 1660 General George Monck marches to London (arriving 3 February) and, with his army of 7,000 paid soldiers, holds the whip hand as the most powerful man in the country. He has dinner and supper with friends, attends a party at the home of Navy surgeon James Pearse, which is a little too wild for Pepys and his wife, Elizabeth ( 24 January). Despite turbulent times Pepys’ social life in the early months of the diary sets a pattern that will become familiar. ![]() ![]() ![]() The two human cosmic voyagers, a politician and a scientist, represent the worst their professions have to offer both mankind and Selenite-kind, and the hapless end of the scientist Cavor at the hands of the moon people on the novel's last page is wonderful satire.". Wells' interest is sociological- to depict the insect-like society of the Selenites which is at once Utopian and thoroughly alien. I’m not sure why translator Abigail Lee Six translates Tormento, the original Spanish title of the novel, as Inferno: there is no explanation given in the introduction, and there are no explanatory notes at the end.
